The 'Vissy' credenza is finished in high gloss two-pac polyurethane. It has changeable sliding doors (timber or fabric covered), enabling adaptability to changing seasons and environments. Drawing upon the antiquated furniture making technique of marquetry, Vissy's timber sliding doors is a reinterpretation of this into the contemporary format of a geometric circular pattern. The circles come alive as you move around the room, the light catches them similar to the way dandelions subtly grab your attention as they sway in the breeze. The fruit bowl morphing into the surface is a logical progression of enhancing the shininess, typifying the forms seen in ceramics, and creating an interesting dialogue between the surfaces.
I wanted to bring others into my world and enable them to envision what I see. The Vissy credenza is a merging of nostalgic historical references with digitally inspired processes and forms. Gazing at an empty espresso cup I was struck by the sheen created by the curves. I wanted to emulate the way light refracted off the glossy surface but on a large scale. Through observation, I realized radioed edges in most earthenware is not only functional but also serves to enhance the shininess of the glaze; giving birth to the idea of making furniture inspired by ceramics, that a flowing form where the surface would look almost liquid and would gleam like glaze.
An additional inspiration comes from a fascination of melding different genres, periods and mediums to create a distinctive and unique product language. The pattern on the walnut doors is based on dandelions in a field that create a surreal effect, enabling me to explore a digitally inspired interpretation. Similarly, the highly textured fabric is juxtaposed with the hard surface of the cabinet exploiting a play on coolness and warmth. It is preposterous that in our transient and nomadic society many objects cannot transform and adapt to our changing environments. This observation prompted me to incorporate interchangeable doors that can be personalized, reflecting our change of lifestyle and choices.
